The problem

Same treatment, wildly different prices, and nowhere to compare. A check-up is £27.90 on the NHS; privately, within 6 miles of Canary Wharf, £30 to £175. A root canal: £150 to £850 in East London, £250 to £1,460 in the City and Southwark.

Dentists must show prices on their website (General Dental Council, Standard 2.4). Of 280 practices we cover, 102 do that we could find.

NHS listings flatter: when the British Dental Association phoned 100 practices listed as taking NHS patients, 1 in 10 could.

  • 280 practices in six London boroughs; 787 prices at 102 of them, each checked by hand against the practice's own page.
  • 135 NHS listings read every week; 64 say they're taking new patients, shown with the date they last confirmed it.
  • Cost so far: £3.88 (the domain) and 1 to 1.5 hours a day since 19 Oct 2026. No paid services.
